Squirrel Hunting Begins
June 19, 2008This is perhaps my favorite time of year. After a long winter of anticipation I will finally be able to walk the hardwoods again in search of one of my favorite game animal, squirrels. Those of us who grew up in the south understand what squirrel hunting is about. Like most of you, squirrel was my first quarry, I learned to stalk, shoot and field dress with these little critters. The memories I have of hunting in the back woods of Kentucky with my father began with walking the hardwoods on spring mornings carrying my .22 rifle I got for Christmas. It has been many years since my first childhood experiences here in the Eastern Kentucky hardwoods but I still look forward to opening day with the childlike excitement of my memories.
So, after the long winter, and with opening day upon us, I have begun to prepare. I plan on spending some time in the woods this weekend scouting the hardwoods for my favorite stand of Oaks, which always seem to produce a large amount of nuts preferred by my furry little friends. White Oak is my choice, as they seem to produce the best forage for squirrels. As for my choice of firearm, I have used everything from shotgun to rifle to handgun but my choice these days is the Marlin Model 39A lever action with a .22 LR. As a young man I prided myself on using iron sites, but as I mature in years I have begun to use a 4x scope. I am anxious to get into the woods so I will leave you with the anticipation of my first hunting report next weekend.
I remain,
Sincerely yours,
Jeremiah Weed
